International schools that are not accredited schools do not fulfill the compulsory education requirement for Japanese national children, and students who complete primary school may not automatically progress to middle school within the accredited system. Families with foreign nationality are exempt from Article 17 of the School Education Law.

North American-model schools in Kansai do not simply equate to "American = AP." Instead, schools like Canadian Academy and Marist operate under North American governance and accreditation (CIS / WASC, etc.) while directing students toward IB as their exit qualification.

Japanese-English bilingual programs include KIA (a pure international school with Japanese-English bilingual IB continuum) and Suito International (a public accredited school with English-Japanese DP).
