ABOUT

What Is the CAT4?

The CAT4 measures cognitive ability across four domains: Verbal, Non-Verbal, Quantitative, and Spatial. Unlike academic attainment tests, it evaluates underlying learning potential and thinking skills.

Verbal Reasoning

This section assesses the ability to understand word meanings and relationships and to reason logically with language. It requires strong vocabulary and verbal thinking skills, testing knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, and contextual understanding in English.

Non-Verbal Reasoning

Using shapes and patterns, this section measures logical thinking independent of language. Questions involve rotation, reflection, and identifying rules within patterns.

Quantitative Reasoning

This section evaluates logical thinking with numbers and quantities. It includes identifying rules in number sequences and understanding quantitative relationships, requiring both mathematical foundations and reasoning ability.

Spatial Ability

This section measures the ability to mentally manipulate 2D and 3D shapes. Questions cover nets, rotation, and symmetry, testing spatial thinking skills.

OUR APPROACH

ELT's CAT4 Preparation

1

One-to-One Tutoring Starting with Weakness Analysis

We begin with a diagnostic test to identify the balance across all four domains, then focus on weaker areas. A personalised study plan is designed around your child's cognitive profile for maximum efficiency.

2

Specialist Training for Each Domain

Targeted practice questions and problem-solving techniques are taught systematically for each of the Verbal, Non-Verbal, Quantitative, and Spatial domains. We develop pattern recognition skills and a sense of time management.

3

Mock Tests Under Exam Conditions

Mock tests are conducted in the same format and within the same time limits as the actual test. This builds familiarity with the exam environment and maximises performance on the day. Results are analysed to track changes in areas of weakness.

4

Parallel English Language Development

Verbal Reasoning scores are directly linked to English vocabulary and reading comprehension, so we strengthen English proficiency alongside CAT4 preparation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend starting 3–6 months before the test date. Building foundational cognitive skills takes time, so early preparation is beneficial. In the final weeks, we shift to exam-focused practice with mock tests.

Yes. Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Ability are language-independent, so they can be practised regardless of English proficiency. For Verbal Reasoning, we work on English language skills in parallel with test preparation.

The CAT4 is scored using SAS (Standard Age Score), with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Most schools expect a score above 100, while highly selective schools may require 115–130 or higher. The balance across all four domains is also an important factor in the evaluation.

Yes, very much so. We use screen sharing to explain and practise shape-based problems, providing instruction comparable to face-to-face sessions. Our services are widely used by families based overseas.
