ABOUT
What Is the 11+?
The 11+ is an entrance examination for selective secondary schools in the UK, taken by pupils in Year 6 (ages 10–11). Because the content and format differ from school to school, targeted preparation for each specific institution is essential.
English
The English component tests comprehension, creative writing or essay writing, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Reading comprehension questions demand inference and contextual understanding, while the writing section assesses structure, expression, and grammatical accuracy.
Mathematics
Mathematics covers a wide range of topics including arithmetic, fractions and decimals, percentages, geometry, area and volume, and data interpretation. Alongside computational accuracy, pupils need the ability to solve word problems logically and work within strict time limits.
Verbal Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning measures logical thinking through language. Question types include synonyms and antonyms, word rearrangement, code-breaking, and sentence completion, requiring a strong vocabulary and rapid decision-making.
Non-Verbal Reasoning
Non-Verbal Reasoning tests logical thinking through shapes and patterns, independent of language. Questions involve rotation and reflection of figures, identifying pattern rules, and judging similarities between shapes.
OUR APPROACH
ELT's 11+ Preparation
Customised Tutoring for Each Target School
The 11+ varies in format and difficulty from school to school. Based on thorough analysis of past papers, we design study plans optimised for the specific requirements of each target institution, covering GL Assessment, CEM, and ISEB formats.
Balanced Development Across All Four Subjects
We cover English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning comprehensively. Diagnostic tests identify your child's attainment level in each subject, enabling us to focus on weaker areas while building well-rounded scoring ability.
Developing Thinking and Expression in English
In the 11+, English reading and writing skills are decisive factors. Through daily lessons, we steadily develop the ability to think and express ideas in English without relying on translation.
Mock Tests and Time Management Practice
Regular mock tests conducted under exam-like conditions help your child master pacing and time management. Detailed analysis of results allows us to track progress in overcoming weaknesses and make final adjustments ahead of the exam.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Many families begin preparation around Year 4 (ages 8–9). For children whose first language is not English, we particularly recommend an early start, as building a solid foundation in English takes time. That said, intensive preparation from Year 5 can also yield excellent results, so please do not hesitate to contact us for advice.
Yes, absolutely. ELT's online one-to-one tutoring can be taken after school or at weekends while your child continues to attend a Japanese primary school. We create a flexible timetable that fits your child's school schedule, ensuring manageable and sustainable study.
The GL Assessment format features four separately administered subject tests, making past-paper practice relatively straightforward. The CEM format, by contrast, uses a cross-curricular approach with blended question types, which is generally regarded as harder to prepare for. ELT provides tutoring for both formats, ensuring precise preparation matched to the format adopted by each target school.
Most schools allow only one attempt at the 11+, but it is possible to apply to multiple schools. We recommend setting several target schools and preparing for each exam format in parallel, thereby maximising your child's chances of success.
