English Test Score Converter

Convert scores between IELTS, TOEFL, EIKEN CSE, TOEIC, PTE, and Duolingo. Supports TOEFL's new score scale (1–6) and shows reference values as ranges, based on official data.

Every English test uses its own scale, and no exact one-to-one conversion exists between them. Based on the official concordance tables published by each test provider, this tool always presents conversion results as a range.

You can convert using your overall score (OA) alone, but adding section scores narrows the result to a more precise range. Both the new TOEFL iBT score scale (1–6), introduced in January 2026, and the previous scale (0–120) are supported.

CEFR and test score alignment table

This is a guide to alignment based on the CEFR comparison tables and official concordances published by each test provider. TOEIC is shown as the combined Listening & Reading score, and TOEFL on the new scale (1–6).

Alignment is a guide based on values published by each test provider and does not guarantee any conversion. TOEIC measures up to C1. Some values remain under review, including certain TOEFL boundaries, DET, and Eiken section scores. Eiken grades follow the upper limit of each grade's CEFR calculation range in MEXT's comparison table.

Eiken grades, CSE scores, and CEFR

Pass marks and CEFR calculation ranges for each Eiken grade, based on MEXT's Comparison Table of English Qualifications and CEFR. Each grade has a maximum CEFR level it can certify, and scores above the range are still capped at that level.

Below the calculation range, no CEFR level is determined. The table covers Grades 1 to 3; Grades 4 and 5, and any grade corresponding to C2, are not included. Source: MEXT, Comparison Table of English Qualifications and CEFR (March 2018).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Score conversion is a statistical correspondence, so a single point on one test does not map exactly to a single point on another. Test providers themselves present cross-conversions only as reference values, and this tool displays results as ranges rounded to the target test's reporting increments (for example, 0.5 for IELTS and 1 point for EIKEN CSE).

From January 21, 2026, ETS moved TOEFL iBT to a new band scale of 1–6 (in 0.5 increments). The previous scores (0–120) remain valid until January 2028, so the two scales coexist for the time being. This tool lets you switch between the new and previous scales when entering a score, and shows results primarily on the new scale.

No. TOEIC measures up to C1 and cannot determine the C2 level. Even a perfect score (990 on L&R) corresponds to C1 at most and does not indicate native-level proficiency (C2). If you need to demonstrate C2, consider IELTS, Cambridge English, or TOEFL.

The conversion results from this tool are reference values and cannot be used for applications. Each university and institution specifies particular tests and scores, so an official score from the relevant test is required for actual applications. Always check the requirements of the institution you are applying to.

Yes. Select "Eiken (EIKEN CSE)" as the test to convert from, then switch the input method to "By grade". Conversion is based on the CEFR calculation range for each grade in MEXT's Comparison Table of English Qualifications and CEFR (Grade 1 = C1, Grade Pre-1 = B2, Grade 2 = B1, Grade Pre-2 = A2, Grade 3 = A1). A grade is coarser than a CSE score, so if you know your CSE score we recommend entering that instead.

These domestic Japanese tests have no direct official concordance (correspondence study) with IELTS and similar tests, so conversion is done via the CEFR comparison tables. Because it passes through the CEFR bands, there is greater uncertainty, so we display a wider range and mark it as a "reference value."
