Measures of Academic Progress

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is an adaptive computer-based test developed by NWEA (USA) and widely used at international schools around the world. The test dynamically adjusts question difficulty in real time based on the student's responses, providing a precise measure of individual academic ability. ELT provides one-to-one tutoring covering all core MAP subjects to improve your child's RIT score and support a successful admissions outcome.

ABOUT

What Is the MAP Test?

The MAP test is an adaptive assessment covering Reading, Language Usage, Mathematics, and Science (optional). Because question difficulty adjusts automatically based on the student's responses, it provides an accurate picture of each individual's academic level.

Reading

This section measures reading comprehension, vocabulary, and inference skills across both literary and informational texts. It tests a broad range of English reading skills including identifying main ideas, locating specific details, inferring vocabulary from context, and understanding the author's intent.

Language Usage

This section assesses English grammar, usage, and writing skills. It covers sentence structure, correct use of parts of speech, punctuation, and the ability to organise and develop written text — testing academic English proficiency.

Mathematics

This section covers number and operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability. As questions are presented in English, understanding of mathematical terminology in English is important alongside mathematical thinking skills.

Science (Optional)

This section tests foundational knowledge and scientific reasoning across life science, physical science, and earth science. It assesses the ability to interpret experimental data, verify hypotheses, and apply scientific concepts. Some schools include this section in their requirements.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If MAP scores are required for admissions, we recommend starting 2–4 months before the test. Many schools administer the MAP test 2–3 times a year, so preparation can be planned around the next available sitting. An earlier start is advisable if foundational skills need strengthening.

An adaptive test is one in which the difficulty of subsequent questions changes based on the student's responses. A correct answer leads to a more difficult question, while an incorrect answer leads to a slightly easier one. This enables accurate academic measurement with fewer questions than a traditional test. ELT places strong emphasis on practical exercises to build familiarity with this format.

The RIT (Rasch Unit) score is the MAP test's proprietary scale, allowing academic growth to be tracked regardless of grade level or test date. Typical grade-level scores vary by school and year group, but we set target scores based on the percentile expected by the target school. ELT proposes specific score targets tailored to each school's requirements.

Yes, all sessions are available online. Since the MAP test itself is computer-based, practising on screen closely replicates the real test environment. This service is widely used by families based overseas.
