Admissions and transfers for children below school age

Nursery, preschool and kindergarten admissions support

Nursery, preschool and kindergarten admissions support

At this age it is not your child's English that decides the outcome. It is identifying the school that fits your family, the educational philosophy you set out in the application, and the parent interview. ELT focuses on exactly these three.

  • End-to-end support from school selection to the parent interview
  • Interviews supported in both English and Japanese
  • Founded in London in 1984, with British-style teaching experience

You are welcome to consult us even if your target school is undecided

CHALLENGES

Where families get stuck at this stage

Admissions and transfers below school age turn on very different factors from admissions at school age.

No clear basis for comparing schools

International, immersion and Montessori settings differ enormously in approach, and a visit alone rarely gives you a basis for comparison.

Unclear what the application should say

Most questions ask about your family's educational philosophy, which is quite different from what a standard Japanese nursery application expects.

No way to prepare for the parent interview

Whether it is held in English or Japanese varies by school, and the questions are distinctive. Schools also look for consistency between both parents.

Worrying too much about English ability

Most schools are looking at how a child settles into a group and whether the family fits their approach. Misreading this leads you to prepare the wrong things.

OUR APPROACH

We concentrate your preparation on the three things that decide the outcome

Rather than lessons for your child, the budget goes into assessing the school, the application documents and the parent interview.

School selection & assessment

We evaluate fit across educational philosophy, curriculum and your family's priorities, and narrow down candidate schools.

Application document review

Experienced consultants review application forms and family statements, which differ from school to school.

Parent interview preparation

We support interviews in English or Japanese. Interview English lessons with native-speaker teachers are taken parent-and-child, so they also serve as interview practice for your child.

TIMELINE

Working back from the application deadline

Application and selection dates vary by school. The guide below is typical; in your consultation we map it to the actual dates of the schools you are considering.

  1. 12-6 months before

    Research and shortlisting

We draw up candidates based on educational approach, practical constraints and fees, and secure visit slots. At sought-after schools both places and visit slots fill early.

  2. 6-3 months before

    School Visit and the application

We agree in advance what to look for and what to ask, then feed what you learn on the visit into the educational philosophy you set out in the application.

  3. 3-1 months before

    Parent interview preparation

We build your answers to the likely questions and align both parents. Where the interview is in English, you practise with a native-speaker teacher.

  4. Application to result

    Final checks and what follows

We check the submitted documents for consistency, and prepare you for requests for further material or an offer from the waiting list.

EARLY YEARS PACKS

Early Years packs

One-off packs that bundle the preparation you need, sized to the number of schools you are applying to. Lessons for your child are not included.

As a guide to cost: the one-off Early Years pack starts at $2,400. Because it does not include lessons for your child, there is no monthly lesson fee (interview English lessons can be added separately). The enrolment fee of $199 is charged separately.

Interview English lessons (PREMIUM Professional, native-speaker teachers) are taken with parent and child together. Online interview practice for young children is conducted with a parent present, so your child's interview preparation is covered within the lessons. Lessons can be added to Essentials, and individual services are also available on their own.

Note: applying on your behalf, negotiating with schools and any guarantee of admission are not included (document review is limited to the stated number of rounds).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

We support admissions and transfers from nursery (around age 2) to the final year of kindergarten (around age 6). International school admissions from primary age, and boarding school placement in Japan and abroad, are each covered on their own page. If you are not sure which stage applies to you, please raise it in a free consultation.

We recommend getting in touch 6 to 12 months before the application. Application and selection dates vary by school, and at some schools places fill early. Booking school visits, and putting your family's educational philosophy into words for the application, both take time. If you have less time than that, we will set priorities with you and propose what can realistically be covered.

At this age many schools do not treat English ability itself as the main basis for their decision. What they look at is how a child settles into a group, whether they follow instructions, and whether your family's approach matches the school's. That is why ELT's Early Years packs do not include lessons for your child: the weight goes to school selection, application documents and the parent interview. Selection methods do differ by school, so we check the requirements of your target schools individually.

It varies by school: some interview only in English, some only in Japanese, and some use both. ELT supports interviews in either language. We work through the likely questions and structure your answers in whichever language you are most comfortable in, and where an English interview is required you practise with a native-speaker teacher in an interview English lesson.

Because at this age the outcome turns on judging the fit with the school, the application documents and the parent interview rather than on your child's English. The packs are designed to put a limited budget where it has the most effect. Interview English lessons (PREMIUM Professional) are taken with parent and child together, so your child also gets used to the interview setting within those lessons. If you would like English lessons for your child, we can suggest a separate kids' English course.

Complete covers up to three schools, and includes school assessment, review of the application and family statement, and School Visit preparation for three schools each. Essentials covers one school. If you want to apply to four or more, we can add individual services, so please raise it in a free consultation.

We agree in advance what to look for and what to ask at open days, information sessions and family meetings. Schools differ in what they emphasise, so we prepare observation points and a question list tailored to each target school. Afterwards we review what you found and feed it into your ranking of schools and into what you write in the application.

We do not guarantee acceptance to a specific school, or exam scores and grades. Final selection and decisions rest with each school and examination body. ELT continuously manages your child's situation and proposes and accompanies you with evidence-based learning and application strategies to maximise the possibility of acceptance and progression. We make no exaggerated promises of results.

Yes, all of our services are provided online. We have a track record of supporting families across Asia, Europe, North America and elsewhere. We are happy to accommodate different time zones flexibly.

Your payment currency depends on the language of your support. If your contract, counseling, and all correspondence are handled entirely in Japanese, you pay in Japanese yen (the lessons themselves are conducted in English). If you would like your contract, counseling, and correspondence in a language other than Japanese, payment is made in US dollars. Prices are shown in Japanese yen when the site language is Japanese, and in US dollars for all other languages.
