"I hear a prestigious British school has opened in Tokyo, but what makes it different from other international schools?"

"Isn't Kodaira City far? Is it commutable from central Tokyo?"

Opened in September 2023, Malvern College Tokyo (MCT) has a distinct feature that sets it apart from schools like Harrow Appi and Rugby School Japan: the fusion of "British educational traditions" and a "through-train International Baccalaureate (IB) education."

In this article, based on first-hand information gathered by ELT's Director, Tanaka, during a personal campus visit and direct conversations with the admissions team, we explain the "real picture" that parents want to know—from fees and reputation to its IB (DP authorization) status and admissions strategies.

1. What is Malvern College Tokyo (MCT)? A Prestigious British School x Full IB Continuum

MCT is the Tokyo campus of the prestigious Malvern College from the UK, and it is a through-train IB school offering the PYP, MYP, and DP. It received DP authorization in 2026, completing its framework to provide a continuous IB education for students aged 4 to 18.

As the Tokyo campus of "Malvern College," a prestigious co-educational school with over 160 years of history based in Worcestershire, UK, MCT opened in September 2023 in Kodaira City, Tokyo (on the former campus of Bunka Gakuen University).

The biggest news is its authorization for the IB Diploma Programme (DP). The authorization date on the official IB database is April 21, 2026, and the school's press release announced it on May 14, 2026. This completes the full IB continuum of PYP, MYP, and DP. According to the school, in just three years since opening, it has grown to over 400 students from 20 nationalities (the official FAQ also mentions "over 23 nationalities," likely due to differences in timing or counting methods), and the number of teachers has doubled (the exact number is not disclosed). The school plans to expand to Upper Sixth (Year 13) by 2027, aiming for a maximum capacity of 950 students. For the 2026-27 academic year, the highest year level is Lower Sixth (Year 12).

At the core of its education are the 11 "Malvern Qualities." This holistic education, which nurtures qualities such as Resilience, Kindness, and Independence, is integrated into daily school life.

A key point here is that while MCT is a "British-style school," its "exit qualification" is the IB. Unlike Harrow Appi and Rugby School Japan, which adopt a British curriculum progressing from IGCSE to A-Levels, MCT places the IB at its core. This difference is highly significant when choosing a school.

2. [Exclusive Report] The Real MCT: An On-Site Look at PBL, Performing Arts, Science, and the Expansive Campus

In June 2026, ELT's director visited the campus. MCT was impressive for its IB project-based learning, cross-year collaborative productions (including LAMDA-certified performing arts), serious science education, and a spacious campus that is hard to find in central Tokyo.

To understand the reality that can't be seen from online information alone, ELT's Director, Tanaka, visited the campus on June 19, 2026. The strengths of MCT that became apparent are the following four points.

First is its through-train IB Project-Based Learning (PBL). The PYP is a concept-based, transdisciplinary inquiry model, where students learn through daily Japanese lessons and the "PYP Exhibition (PYPx)." Assessment is also multifaceted, combining formative, summative, self, peer, and teacher evaluations, rather than relying on single tests. In the MYP, students engage in eight subject groups, interdisciplinary learning, Service as Action, and a personal project in Year 11 (Hundred). The design emphasizes intellectual curiosity and learning from the real world, rather than rote memorization.

Second is cross-year collaborative production. In stage performances like musicals, students across different year groups take responsibility for everything from the script (story) and costume creation to set design and acting. MCT is a LAMDA-certified school, meaning performing arts are institutionalized through both curriculum and facilities, not just treated as one-off events.

Third is its serious commitment to science education. Building on the UK parent school's strength in chemistry, the campus is equipped with advanced science laboratories and a dedicated preparation room, facilitating IB-style science that integrates Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. During the visit, we were told about classes being taught by renowned university professors.

Fourth is its expansive campus. The site, a renovation of a building designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, covers a total area of 15,577 m². It features a full-size basketball court gymnasium, the Sakura Garden, and an all-weather artificial turf football pitch, offering a spaciousness rarely found in urban, high-rise international schools. Furthermore, the "Malvern Expeditions" program provides grade-specific overnight trips to places like Chiba, Hakuba, Yakushima, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Kyoto, and Shikoku.

On the other hand, the visit also revealed a frank sense of who the school is—and isn't—a good fit for. MCT is not necessarily suitable for families who want a so-called "cram-style" education that solidifies basic academic skills like math through repetition. The honest impression is that this is a school best suited for families who value the IB's project-based learning and an approach driven by intellectual curiosity (this is discussed further in Chapter 6).

3. What Are the "Actual" Costs at Malvern Tokyo? First-Year Total and Scholarships

MCT's annual tuition is approximately ¥2.69 to ¥2.91 million. The total first-year cost, including one-time fees (Application, Registration, and Building Development Fees), is around ¥3.76 to ¥3.97 million. Scholarships and bursaries are available for academics, music, drama, art/design, and sports.

MCT's fees are in the upper range among international schools in Tokyo. Let's first look at the official figures for the 2026-27 academic year.

The "Annual Tuition Fee" alone doesn't show the full picture. When you add the one-time fees (Application Fee ¥22,000 + Registration Fee ¥300,000 + Building Development Fee ¥742,000 = ¥1,064,000) to the annual tuition, the estimated first-year total is as follows:

  • PYP (Pre-Prep to Prep 6): Approx. ¥3.76 million
  • MYP (Foundation Year 1 to Hundred): Approx. ¥3.86 million
  • DP (Lower Sixth): Approx. ¥3.97 million

Please note that bus fees, lunch fees, uniform costs, material fees, and expedition costs are not listed as items on the current official 2026-27 fees page, and the latest confirmed amounts are not available in public information (the older 2025-26 PDF did mention "Lunch and Bus Fees" and an Emergency Kit for ¥17,600). As these will be required separately, we recommend estimating them based on the latest Fee Sheet provided by the school.

Additionally, there is a program for families of expatriates from multinational corporations that offers a 10-20% reduction in tuition for three years. This is not just a corporate benefit discount but a partnership-based reduction that presupposes ongoing contributions to the school (e.g., as guest speakers, mentors, or in joint research).

Scholarships and Bursaries

MCT offers both Scholarships and Bursaries. Both provide partial fee remission, but the percentage of the award is not publicly disclosed (inquiry required).

4. Is it Commutable from Central Tokyo? Location, School Buses, and Facilities

MCT is located in Kodaira City, about 40 minutes from central Tokyo. School buses operate from Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Meguro, and Setagaya wards, and a free shuttle for younger students is available from Kokubunji Station.

For parents, the biggest concern might be the "location." MCT is about an 11-minute bus ride or an 8-minute taxi ride from JR Chuo Line's "Kokubunji Station." The school officially states it is "approx. 40 minutes from the City Centre," but including the bus ride, it's realistic to expect a commute time of about one hour. Indeed, some parent reviews mention that "the long commute seems tough for younger children."

School buses operate from the Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Meguro, and Setagaya areas. In addition, there is a free shuttle connecting Kokubunji Station and the school. The official FAQ states it is for "Pre-Prep to Prep 3" (though a brochure from our visit mentioned "up to Prep 5," please confirm the latest information with the school).

In terms of facilities, the campus (total area 15,577 m²), a renovation of a building designed by Kisho Kurokawa, includes a gymnasium (with 6 basketball hoops, a stage, and a grand piano), an all-weather artificial turf pitch, the Sakura Garden, a fourth-floor library, science labs with a preparation room, and dedicated rooms for STEAM & Design, music, drama, and dance. The dining hall, "Grub," fosters cross-year interaction through house-based meals.

5. Malvern Tokyo's Admissions Process and Expert Prep Strategies

MCT has rolling admissions. For Prep 4 and above, the process includes an online cognitive assessment (CAT4), an English writing task, and a parent-child interview, which assesses the child's potential and the fit between the school and family.

British-style and IB schools do not base admissions on a single standardized test score. MCT's admissions process also emphasizes an assessment that looks at a child's potential and the fit between the school and the family, rather than a single academic test.

The selection process flows from an Online Application (submitting the last two years of school reports + contact details for two teachers/mentors) → Assessment → Parent-Child Interview. Applications are accepted year-round (rolling admissions), and applying early is strongly recommended for popular programs and year groups, as wait lists may form.

Assessments by Year Group

  • Pre-Prep: Observation session + parent interview
  • Prep 1 to 3: Child interview + parent interview
  • Prep 4 and above: Externally provided online cognitive assessment + English writing task + child and parent interview

The test is a "CAT4" type, which measures verbal, non-verbal, quantitative, and spatial reasoning. Students unfamiliar with its unique format may find it difficult to perform to their full potential, so prior preparation can make a significant difference. For more details on preparation, please see this article.

The parent-child interview focuses on the alignment (fit) between the family's educational philosophy and the school's ethos. At least one parent's attendance is mandatory. Be prepared to discuss your motivation for applying and your child's learning style in English (with Japanese support available if needed). Our guide on preparing for boarding school interviews may also be helpful.

All classes are conducted in English, with students grouped by proficiency. For Prep 4-6 and Foundation Year 1 and above, EAL (English as an Additional Language) support is provided as needed (weekly hours, class size, and additional costs are unconfirmed; we did confirm the presence of a dedicated EAL room during our visit). While the school has officially announced phased application dates for 2026-27, some dates may not be up-to-date, so please check the school's official website for the latest information.

6. Who is it For (and Not For)? A Comparison with YIS, KIST, ASIJ, and RSJ

MCT holds a unique position with its "British Brand x IB Continuum x Tokyo Commute." It differs from established IB schools (YIS, KIST), the nearby prestigious American school (ASIJ), and the British A-Level school (RSJ).

Families considering MCT will find it helpful to compare it along three axes depending on their goals: ① other IB schools (YIS, KIST), ② nearby schools in West Tokyo (ASIJ), and ③ other British-style schools (RSJ).

【Professional's Advice on Choosing】

  • If you're deciding between IB schools (YIS/KIST vs MCT): If you prioritize a long track record of DP results and a strong alumni network, choose YIS or KIST. If you value a British-style holistic education, new facilities, a prestigious brand, and are excited by the idea of growing with the school, choose MCT.

  • Comparing with other schools in West Tokyo (ASIJ vs MCT): Both are day schools in West Tokyo. If you prioritize an American-style AP curriculum and a long-established record of university placements, choose ASIJ. If you are looking for IB inquiry-based learning and British-style pastoral care, choose MCT.

  • If you're deciding between British-style schools (RSJ vs MCT): If you want to specialize in strong subjects through A-Levels in an immersive, full-boarding environment, choose Rugby School Japan. If you want a through-train IB education and a day school commute from Tokyo, choose MCT.
  • Read article

An In-Depth Guide to Rugby School Japan (RSJ) [2026 Edition]

  • Families for whom MCT might not be a good fit: If your top priority is rote learning and repetition to solidify basic academic skills, or if you place the highest importance on a fully established university placement record, then established schools like ASIJ, YIS, or KIST would be easier to compare.
  • It is important to note that a British brand name does not automatically guarantee the quality of the Tokyo campus. For schools bearing the name of a prestigious overseas institution, it is necessary to evaluate the brand of the parent school and the actual operations of the local (Tokyo) campus separately.

How to Interpret University Placement Records

As a new school, MCT's university placement record for its Tokyo graduates is still being established (the highest year level in 2026-27 is Lower Sixth). For now, a realistic way to evaluate the school is by its operational structure for the DP Core. Specifically, the school has publicly stated that TOK, the EE (a 4,000-word research paper), and CAS are established as distinct components, supported by a Sixth Form Tutor Programme for progress and well-being monitoring, and university guidance (led by Andrew Maguire, the DP Coordinator and University Counsellor). A definitive list of DP subjects offered in the first year has not yet been released (only subject groups and examples have been published).

Furthermore, statistics that appear in brochures and school introductions, such as "100% IB Diploma pass rate, average score of 36 (world average 29.9), 67% received offers from Russell Group universities," are the achievements of the Malvern Family of Schools, including the UK parent school, and not the record of graduates from the Tokyo campus.

Conclusion: MCT is a Unique Option Offering a "British-Style x IB Continuum" Education Commutable from Central Tokyo

Malvern College Tokyo is a school with a different appeal from long-established international schools. In addition to its British brand, IB continuum, new facilities, and small class sizes, the 2026 DP authorization has solidified its "exit pathway," moving it into a phase where it can be evaluated on its substance, not just its brand.

However, its university placement record and alumni network are areas that will develop over time. Therefore, it is crucial to judge the school based on the actual operations of the Tokyo campus, rather than being drawn in by the brand alone. Having visited the campus ourselves, ELT can provide an objective assessment of whether MCT is the right fit for your child.

"Is my child suited for the IB's inquiry-based learning?"

"I want professional help preparing for the cognitive assessment tests and the parent-child interview in English."

If you have these concerns, please feel free to consult with ELT. Our expert consultants, who specialize in international school admissions, will propose the optimal strategy for your child.
